the *actual* Romanian adventure

I guess I was so tired last night when I was writing, that I forgot the most exciting and funny part of my adventure (ok, most of you probably won't find it all that funny, but still....): when I got on the bus at the train station here in Brasov, a guy got on to check all of our tickets, so while I was still thinking bout that, I realised that there was this other guy who was standing in the aisle next to me (I was sitting) who was really leaning over me. It kind of looked like he was resting on a hand rail or something, but the only thing was...there was no handrail, just my leg and backpack - oh, and he was holding a shirt in that hand to obstruct his actions.....hmm.....I knew that my packs were both closed in such a way that he couldn't get into them, but I moved my leg away, and this map in my pocket was sticking half-way out....hmm...so, of course, I moved my leg away and he sort of shuffled his hand OFF/OUT OF my pocket and looked at me, I looked at him so that he knew that I knew what he was doing, and he ended up getting off at the next stop. The funny part (or sad?) is that I'm sure the driver knew what was going on, since I was in the very first seat and after the guy got off, the driver kept looking at me....also, there was a police officer on the bus, who got off at the stop after the pickpocket! nice, hey?
Anyway, that's my story. That's *actually* what I meant to write about last night, and just forgot. Oh, and apparently it's so hot in Bucharest right now that no one is supposed to be going to work (a red caution or some other bad translation)....oh, and there are medical tents set up both in Bucharest and here in Brasov. Awesome.

It's times like this when you wish you had a friendly pet scorpion in your pocket, waiting for uninvited hands that it could attack.

Yikes- climate change at its finest...That is, to explain the 45C heat...Not the pickpocket!

Are you trying to worry me? Wendy and I think you handled it the right way. The cop was probably in on it and it would probably have cost you mucho in bribes to get out of it! Smart girl. Please stay safe though, and use this as a reminder that it's a bit dodgy out there! Love you! Going to watch fireworks tomorrow! G'ma moves to Augustine HOuse next week.

figured this one would get some comments...of course I'm not trying to worry you mum, and it wasn't really a big deal - it's not like he got anything, but it definitely acts as a wake up call (and I thought I was being overcautious before!). How did the A. House thing come about? email me details! and yes d, if you lived in vancouver, you could have advised me on the scorpion....but you don't. oh well. let you poor little sister get almost stolen from.....tsk tsk.

So...the would-be thief didn't steal anything, did he? Are you sure he didn't leave anything of value in your pocket? I know throughout SE Asia the scam is for one person to drop a cell phone in your pocket or shopping bag and then alert a conveniently-close police officer to the fact that you have stolen their phone. Obviously they find the phone, and then you're forced to pay a massive bribe to the cop to avoid being arrested. Keep stuff like this in mind. Extortion's just as much a problem as theft.

yeh, they took nothing, and left nothing. I noticed before he got anything, so that's good. I'm sure extortion is a problem here too, but....we'll deal with that if/when it comes up...hopefully it doesn't, obviously.

Jaime, I saw something similar on a metro in Paris. Right as I was moving toward the pickpocketter, the guy who was getting pickpocketted, swatted the guy's hand. The guy got off at the next station.

By the way, Amber just got her bag stolen at this internet cafe. Gotta go.
